I just finished reading your book “Guitar notes” and would love to get to know more about what inspired you to write this…this has inspired me to learn to write music and perform but I need somewhere to start…
I’m so glad that you enjoyed the novel and that you are starting your own songwriting and performing journey.
My biggest piece of advice is to allow yourself the freedom to play. You didn’t mention if you play the guitar or piano or no instrument at all. Either way, you can allow yourself to sing and, if you have an instrument, to experiment with accompaniment. Keep it really simple.
Try brainstorming the way Tripp and Lyla do in the book just on a word or phrase (like “Guilty”). Your chorus can be as simple as one word or phrase repeated.
If you are looking for a teacher, find someone who is interested in improvisation rather than someone who is all about sight-reading music that has already been written.
I wrote the book because it took me so long to allow myself to let go. I’m still learning.
There will be a guitar giveaway on my site in January or February, so check back. Also I will have a new novel out in 2014 about another girl who is also a songwriter.
Keep thrumming. Let me know how it’s going.
